Evaluation Question 3

3: What Kind of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product and Why?

When coming to distributing our film, we have looked at many distribution companies, seeing which companies have made films in the romance genre, films similar to our own film, companies that use a low budget and finally companies that make British films.

We think our first institution would be Working Title Films. Working Titles Films is a British film production company based in London; the company was founded by Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in 1983. It produces feature films and several television productions. Polygram was its first corporate backer, which was then sold and made into Universal. It has made a range of films from comedies such as Hot Fuzz to children’s films like Nanny Mcphee. We think this institution would be perfect for us. Firstly it is a British company, and our film is British, meaning it will be local to us and also understand the characters and aspects of a British movie, which can vary from an American film. Working Title Films has created many romance films in the past such as Wimbledon, About Time, Defiantly Maybe, Bridget Jones, The Shape of Things and I Give It A Year. This means they have a strong background into romance films, and how to make the most of them, also people will have recognised them from other popular romance films, causing them to trust our film will be up to that standard. To expand on my previous points it has also made a British Romance movie, which we have taken allot of inspiration from "Bridget Jones" this again means they have dealt with similar films to ours, giving us the impression they will be able to produce ours to a high standard.

The second institution we have chosen for our film is DNA films. DNA films are again a British company founded by Duncan Kenworthy and Andrew Macdonald. It has become one of the most successful production companies in London. It has made a variety of films from horrors such as 28 Weeks Later to romances such as A Life Less Ordinary and also comedies such as Twin Town. We think this company would be good for us firstly because it is British so again will understand the features of a British comedy which can vary from other countries. They have also produced romances before such as A Life Less Ordinary and Never Let Me Go. The films they create are very low budget, which relates to our films allot as we did not have a large budget. They also create films that have an edge to them and are quirky, not always your typical storyline. We think our film would also fall under this cartography and we have tried to make it different from others and more quirky.

Another way to get our film out would be through using film festivals. Ones that we researched and found very popular were the BFI the London Film Festival, these lend lottery money to films wanting to get to the production stage which could be a good for our film before we make it. But once we have made we could showcase it at this festival, this is a good way to get people to see our film and "get it out there" into the market of Britain which will probably be our main market as it is an all British film. We also looked at sun dance as they have a section for independent films which often shows romance films, therefore it will suit our genre well and same as before get our video out there and seen.

Advertising will also be a large factor in distrusting our film. Advertsing will be important to get our film out there and seen by people. We will do this with posters which we will place in places teenagers our target audience will go such as cinemas, shopping centers, bowling alleys and ice rinks. We will also release a trailer before hand to give a taster of what our film will be about to entice people in to watching it, this will be shown at cinemas on TV shows around 5-10 as that will be when younger people are generally watching TV and also around shows they like such as Hollyoaks and comedy shows. We will also do a viral campaign to showcase our film. This will be particularly helpful for us as our target audience teenagers use it very often and also it is very cheap to use. We will post our trailer on sites such as Youtube to be viewed. Have pages on social networking sites so people can keep updated on our movie. Also also have a viral poster on sites where teenagers view, such as online shopping, gaming sites and IMBD which will attract people purposely looking to view films.

Our production company is GEL, we though this was short and snappy and would be easy to remember. We did the logo so it looked so it was fairly plain then lit up in a shadow. We did this plain firstly as our film isn't very "showy offy" so we thought a lairy logo would not match the film. We also thought plain colors represented this too. We did the light up logo so it stood out more and so our company will be remembered.
